And one could always start a fire with a page of poetry, highlighting its utility rather than its poetic significance. We will call all artifacts where significance predominates over utility, "cultural products. As cultural objects become more interchangeable, each one declines in significance, loses its "aura," hence declines in monopolistic rent. Since the value of the cultural object is based on the monopolistic rent or, to a subordinate degree, on the object's utility, the value of the cultural object should decline as well.

This doesn't occur under late capitalism, however. As Horkheimer and Adorno have put it, "what might be called use value in the reception of cultural commodities is replaced by exchange value. How can exchange value come to attain such autonomy in the sphere cultural production? Only through a widespread process of fetishization. The consumer is paying, not for the product but for the packaging. Rather than assessments of value based on the qualities of the product, judgments about the qualities of the product are based upon its exchange value, its price, its top-ten rating.

This is the height of commodity fetishism. As Horkheimer and Adorno stressed, the essential characteristic of the culture industry is repetition. As early as his essay "On Jazz," Adorno had argued that an essential characteristic of popular music was its standardization. Standardization extends from the most general features to the most specific ones. By contrast, "serious music" is a "concrete totality" for Adorno, whereby "every detail derives its musical sense from the concrete totality of the piece. In the case of serious music, interchangeability is not possible; if a detail is omitted, "all is lost.

Other illustrations could be given, such as the soap operas with their substitutable episodes, horror films with their formulas, etc. This repetition is due to the reflection in the sphere of cultural production of the standardized and repetitive processes of monopoly capitalist industry. Under late capitalism, what happens at work, in the factory, or in the office can only be escaped by approximating it in one's leisure time. This sets the terms for cultural products: "no independent thinking must be expected from the audiences" instead, "the product prescribes every reaction. Now any person signifies only those attributes by which he can replace everybody else; he is interchangeable. It might be argued that the standardization of the cultural product under late capitalism is technologically determined, the same as an industrial product such as a can of green beans.

Horkheimer and Adorno begin by considering, and dismissing, the claim that the standardization, the identity of mass culture, can be explained in technological terms. Technology attains its power, they argue, only through the power of monopolies and great corporations. As Stuart Ewen has pointed out, mass society has two aspects, mass production and mass consumption.

He states that "the expression 'industry' [in the concept 'culture industry'] is not to be taken literally. It refers to the standardization of the thing itself -- such as the Western, familiar to every movie-goer -- and to the rationalization of distribution techniques, but not strictly to the production process. One is for stimuli that provoke the listener's attention The other is for material to fall within the category of what the musically untrained listener would call 'natural' music Adorno continues that "the paradox in the desiderata -- stimulatory and natural -- accounts for the dual character of standardization itself.

Stylization of the ever identical framework is only one aspect of standardization. This dual characteristic of popular music also proves to be significant for purposes of marketing it. In order to be mass marketed, "a song-hit must have at least one feature by which it can be distinguished from any other, and yet possess the complete conventionality and triviality of all others.

Without standardisation, it could not be "sold automatically, without requiring any effort on the part of the customer;" it could not be mass-marketed at all. As Horkheimer and Adorno point out, "modern communications media have an isolating effect. The modern administration of capitalist society, with its effective means of communication, keeps people from gregarious interaction.

Automobiles facilitate travel of people "in complete isolation from each other. Popular music either promotes the thoughtlessness of the masses or else provides the content of their thought. Regarding the first of these, Adorno invokes the Distraction Thesis. It is also a product of that music; "the tunes lull the listener to inattention. Id rather we develop rational thinking than a bunch of smelly ass ingrates who champion faux intelligence. How about you fucking contribute and grow us as a people. Not make us "reflect" on some stupid shit that doesn't add any substance to our achievements as man. People say it helps relieve anxiety, depression, stress, makes you happy, etc The most succesful people are busy and they dont have time to listen to music.

You can do way better things with your time for example; educate yourself, make money, travel, gain a new experience, learn a new skill, time with your family and many more things. And by the way people get addicted to it so its definetly a legal drug. In a pitiless analysis I find Art and music nothing more than instruments of self indulgence. They feed no one, country's GDP does not grow, and worse those who are not good at them feel small for no reason at all. Purely from the point of view of India, sports, art, music do not add anything at all. If we didn't have a tendulkar, ravi shankar or hussian, we would just be the same, wallowing in poverty, injustice, and corruption. We can't afford these luxuries. I hate sportsmen, artists and musicians who claim doing things for the country and expect people to worship them- bull crap!!

If you waste one hour of your valuable time each day listening to music, Then you are wasting hours approx. That time might be used in a person's self-development and prosperity. Moreover, Music tends you to find immediate happiness just like drugs which should be replaced with long-term sources of pleasure, Like exercising, Reading books etc. Simply put, a lot of art is devoid of much substance pertaining to logic or objective or useful meaning. But so is life itself. Life is objectively meaningless. So of course people make their own meaning. To cast away art and subjective experience is to cast away the human experience. Somebody from the other side of the debate states - "When scientists ask great questions for the good of humanity, artists are indulging themselves in joy.

Art is the exercise and materialization of emotion. To hide it, or to not use it at all, to be completely emotionless, would be completely pointless. What separates us from the non-living is the ability to feel, and to shun that would render this life null. A life dedicated to enjoyment, is the life of an artist. Last time I checked The Starry Night, wasn't curing cancer Further more some may argue that art gets some people through life and pull them through hard times. Well guess what good for the few that, that applies to; however science provides treatment for illnesses that a paint brush or instrument couldn't even remotely do anything to help fix.

Pleasure is just a drug. If you're not constantly do math or physics every second in your life, Then you are just procrastinating and wasting your precious life time. Humans exist to study science and learn about the laws of the universe. Its our only purpose. Every second of Pleasure and Relaxing is a waste of cerebral capacities. People argue that we need to relax or that art is also a way to express humanity but in the end it is just subjectivity. With every painting you create or every minute of listening to music, You could invest this precious time into studying science or working on life-necessary processes. In my opinion, People have way too much freetime and they should use every second of their short life to bring knowledge further or use the mind and body that is given to them for hard work that has use to it except finding things just aestethically for fun.

Fun is for useless people. There are too many starving artists out here and their supply is higher than the demand. You cannot force people to buy your art or musical talent as if it were an essential tool, Resource, Or equipment that's necessary to sustain a decent quality of life. The world doesn't need starving artists. The artist needs the world to buy into their delusional idea of making it easy for them to make a great living. The only musicians and artists who have made good careers are those who didn't take shortcuts and they made important connections while being at the right time and place. The more artists waste time trying to make a living from their art, They will fail in this economy. Find a blue collar or white collar trade and only perform or create your art during your free time or on a freelance basis.

It might just be a short class, But it takes you out of the work mindset and puts you in play mode. This isn't the case for all people but, It happens to most people. Art can get messy real fast and music is most of the time annoying. Hope this helps. The question is flawed. All time is "wasted. Other forms of progress are not only temporary and illusory but only function to support man's higher conscious workings. Music and art is creativity.

People need to have that outlet and joy in their lives.
